Grace Nakimura is Gabriel Knight's one time assistant, researcher and, eventually, investigative partner .

Background

She was originally born in New York, a daughter of very traditional Japanese parents, they lived in Japan until she was three, before being brought to the United States. Her parents wished her to marry Mark Kobayashi. Since 1983 she studied Tai Chi. She got a Master in History and Classes however 18 years of school were enough for her and did not pursue Ph.D. despite the wishes of her parents.

She has taken a hiatus from her Ivy-league doctorate ambitions and having read much about New Orleans, she moved there "to clear her head" around March 1993. Having a love for old books and needing to pay her bills during her stay there, she took a job at St. George's Books on a whim; partly to seek adventure, and partly to escape the oppressive tradition her Japanese parents try to push on her.

Sins of the Fathers

As the bookstore did not have many customers, most of her work had to do with taking messages from Gabriel's conquests, such as Dana and Susie (who threatened with a lawsuit) and performing research for him.

Optimistic and intelligent, Grace has a thirst for adventure, yet a strong sense of danger, a willingness to believe in the supernatural, and a talent for research. When she is not book-keeping and researching for her employer, she practices Tai Chi and oil painting, two talents which prove useful in Gabriel's first case.

On Day 1 Gabriel asks her to do research on Malia Gedde's address.

On Day 2 Gabriel asks her to do research on Madame Cazaunoux, and she teases Gabriel on whether she is a new conquest. She returns with a page ripped from a phone book.

On Day 3 she tries to dissuade Gabriel from selling the painting of his father to Bruno but he tells her to stay out of it. He asks her to do research on a veve pattern found in the Voodoo Murders scenes. As she exits the store, she sees Malia Gedde wanting to see Gabe.

On Day 4 she displays some jealousy for Gabe. After looking at the public library, she tells Gabe that the veve patterns is similar to that of a 1810 crime scene.

On Day 5 she brings Gabe a book on Rada drums and a package from Wolfgang Ritter. She finds it open and reads his journal, and warns Gabe that he is in trouble. (Because of a bug, Grace might also mention again her research on the veve pattern. When Gabe returns from the Voodoo Museum, she notices a python scale on his face, and removes it.

On Day 6, when she enters the shop, she witnesses that someone entered and left a ritual there, with a mutilated chicken. Her screams wake Gabe, who sents her to get some coffee before cleaning the mess. Grace was shocked and she warned Gabe once more to stay out of the Voodoo story. Gabe also employs her skills in drawing when he asks her to draw a fake snake tattoo on his chest, claiming that he is going to a party with Malia Gedde. Grace suspects that he is going to the St. John's Eve and follows him to the St. John Bayou, and when Gabe falls unconscious, he drags him back to St. George's Books.

On Day 7 she helps Gade wake up and tells him to contact Wolfgang. She also arranges it so that Rebecca Knight leaves the city for her safety. Later that day Wolfgang calls and notifies Gabe that he found what they were looking for, and Gabe leaves for Germany.

During Gabe's absence she managed to get the painting back from Bruno. She is seen talking with Gerde Hull inquiring about Gabe, when a burst of wind opens the door and Gabe finds her missing on Day 10.

She was taken to the Voodoo Hounfour to be sacrificed. Gabe finds her unconscious and heals her with the Talisman, and makes a plan with Franklin Mosely. Moments before Malia/Tetelo kills her, Gabe and Mosely stop the ceremony and when Dr. John hits Grace, Mosely shoots him. Gabe throws the Talisman at them so that they can leave safely.

In the "good ending", Grace ponders with Gabe that there are more things to see than everyday life, and decides to abandon her studies and stay with Gabe to assist him in the Schattenjäger business.

In the "bad ending", she is with Mosely, discussing how the last descendants of the Gedde and the Ritters annihilated both families.

The Beast Within

The second entry in the series sees Grace taking a more proactive role, becoming a playable character who takes up the research and historical context aspect of the game, much to Gabriel's chagrin. She at times displays a hostility toward people who are unwilling to aid her in her research stemming from her dejection from Gabriel, in particular Gerde, the housekeeper of Schloss Ritter. Her perseverance proves vital to Gabriel's investigation and his life, leading him to re-examine his over-protective attitude toward her and regard her as a full partner by the time of the third game. While she often regards Gabriel with dismay and sarcasm, it is apparent that they do indeed care for each other, perhaps beyond the realm of the platonic

.During the second chapter she finds the hidden library in Schloss Ritter and learns the existence of "The Black Wolf" after reading through a book on werewolves and the diaries of Christian and Victor Ritter as well as a letter written to Ludwig II warning him of the black wolf.Later that night a tourist visiting the house Meryl Smith gives a warning via a vision that Gabriel is in danger from the same person.

In Chapter 4 after getting a tarot reading from the Smiths she under instruction from Gabriel grudgingly visits the Herrenchiemesee,Neuschwanstein Castle and Wahnfried Museums to get information on both Ludwig II and Richard Wagner. She also meets up with Josef Dallmeier an expert on Ludwig at Starnberger See Votivkapelle.

In Chapter 6 she locates the three pieces of Wagners lost opera "The Curse Of Engelhart" at both Neuschwanstein Castle and Altotting. Two months later at the premier she sets up the crystal chandeliers at the premier and then the trap laid for Baron Friedrich Von Glower and aids Gabriel in killing him.

Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned

In GK3 Grace falls asleep when Prince James's son is kidnapped and is brought to Rennes-le-Château by his men, Mallory and McDougall. Joining the tour Grace learns of and discovers Le Serpent Rouge, a bizarre poem which contains clues to the location of the treasure. Over the course of the game Grace not only discover that the treasure is not in fact what she thinks but also that Emilio Baza is the Wandering Jew. In the final parts of the game she assists Gabriel through a radio as he faces the many dangers of the underground temple. By the end of the game she leaves Gabriel in order to go to India.
